How much do you know about your Pelvic Floor?
Ladies, you've all heard about kegels... I'm sure you giving it a go right now ;) but there is more to your pelvic floor than you just a tight squeeze here and there!
Your Pelvic floor is a hammock of muscles situated in the pelvis, supporting the pelvic organs (uterus, bladder, bowel, Vagina). These muscles play an important role in bladder and bowel continence and control and sexual function.
Dysfunction of the pelvic floor is more prevalent than you'd think. In males and females! The symptoms of which can seriously affect one's quality of life.
- One in Four Women experience Pelvic Floor dysfunction
- 1/3 Women do kegels incorrectly
- Prevalence increases with age
- Prevalence increases with weight
- 1/11 Women require Surgery, 1/3 of these women require multiple surgeries
- 1/3 Women suffer sphincter damage during childbirth resulting in Fecal incontinence
So What causes Pelvic floor dysfunction?
- Chronic constipation
- Chronic coughing
- High Impact exercise
- Heavy Lifting
- hormone therapy
- Pelvic surgery
What are the symptoms?
- Pelvic organ prolapse ("plum between your legs" "something coming out" "heaviness")
- Urinary incontinence (Stress/ Urge/ Mixed)
- Fecal Incontinence
- Pelvic pain
- Muscle spasm within the pelvis
- Sexual pain and dysfunction
- Lower back pain
Kegels are not always the answer!
If you are experiencing any of the above mentioned symptoms, you need to have your pelvic floor assessed by a pelvic floor therapist! Once you have been assessed, we will be able to determine if you are 'too loose' or 'too tight', only then will we be able to determine if strengthening or releasing the muscles of the pelvic floor will give you relief.
Pelvic floor conditions do not have to be left in the dark. You do not have to feel embarrassed or shamed to address and discuss your symptoms. Look at the stats, chance are, you are not alone!
